During my Game of Thrones tour around the Mývatn Lake area in northern Iceland, I saw numerous attractions mostly around the eastern and southern sides of the lake, but the drive itself gave me a pretty good view of the area as well.

I had lunch at the Vogafjós Cafe for which I should have taken pictures of the inside! One side of the building inside is a cow barn, and there were lots of them stabled there! The other side was the cafe that was full of windows and had a wonderful view of the outside land around it which looked mostly like a barren wasteland. Very scenic though! Thankfully the smell of the barn did not follow me over to the cafe side, whew!

Grjótagjá Cave, Jon and Ygritte’s cave. Here is the sign and a fissure above the cave. See my Mývatn, Mystery and Magic post for pictures of the cave itself.

Dimmuborgir walking paths. This was a neat area to walk through. Didn’t do it all because my tour had other objectives in mind, such as viewing the area where Mance Rayder’s camp was set up. The pictures of the tall rock formations below are not rocks by the way, they are trolls! Trolls turned to stone by the sun! Does this sound like another world we may be familiar with?! *Cough*Bilbo Baggins*Cough*

Námafjall Hverir: This is a geothermal area I visited. I believe Námafjall is the volcanic mountain and Hverir is the hot springs part of it, too hot I think for humans or most other lifeforms. Hopefully I’m not wrong with this info!

Here is a 5 second video, yes I’m pretty boring but I was not aware I was being filmed! Besides, it’s the steam that’s the really cool part here 😛
I visited the Mývatn Nature Baths, a geothermal heated pool. No I did not go in, just sat and had a coffee (or should I say ‘kaffi’) and took in the sights. It’s a popular tourist attraction though, as these pools can be found all over Iceland.
