While viewing film locations on the Game of Thrones tour around Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, I got to see additional sites including two more waterfalls (frozen as you will see) as well as go for coffee and a bite to eat at three cafes along the way. The drive was beautiful. Along the highway were non-stop scenes of snow and mountains and sky but not a lot of trees like what I’m used to seeing in Canada. I did manage to see some trees though (a rarity!) and take a picture of them near one of the cafes we stopped at.

We visited the Öxarárfoss waterfall, mostly frozen but could still hear running water underneath all the ice. This one is near where we visited the Bloody Gate scenes from Game of Thrones:

We stopped at a couple cafes along the highway during the journey. Had fries and a coffee at the Àrborg Restaurant, McDonalds style medium fries which was a decent size (larger than a large at McDonalds), completely plain with a coffee for $12 CAD. Have I mentioned how much I love that my BMO Mastercard sends me a text every time a charge goes through on the card? In Iceland the text always arrived instantly and gave me the CAD amount that was charged.

Also visited Hjálparfoss, another mostly frozen waterfall. I am SUPER curious to see what all these waterfalls look like during summer months! Might just have to come back! This one is not far from Olly’s village in Game of Thrones.

On the way back from the tour, our last stop was the Fákasel Restaurant which I think was just west of Selfoss, one of the larger towns in Iceland aside from Reykjavik. Our GoT guide said the Fákasel has the best hot chocolate in all of Iceland, so of course I tried it (instead of coffee!) and it was pretty darn good! Since it’s the ONLY hot chocolate I tried in Iceland, I will vouch for it being the best… for now!!
