Geocaching Success in Reykjavik!

By

Geocaching is somewhat new to me, only starting about a month or so ago and only finding one cache where I live before heading off to Iceland.  I got to explore Akureyri before Reykjavik and although there were two geocaches near my hotel in Akureyri, I completely forgot to go looking for them, yaaaaarrrrrr!!!!

So anyway, I had a better time with it in Reykjavik, finding a physical geocache and a virtual one.  The physical one was super obvious based on its name and the same text engraved on the box however; it wasn’t that obvious until I actually saw it of course.  So I spent a bit of time looking in and around rock crevices like those in the picture at the top of this post, all while attempting not to stray off the sidewalk.

I did feel a little odd with all the people (muggles) walking by!  There was another couple wandering around the same area too and the girl had her phone out as if she was looking for something with it.  I was about to ask if she was looking for the geocache when she suddenly looked at a sticker on the nearby lamp post, took a picture of it and left!  Not sure what other games are out there, maybe it was Pokémon Go or something, no idea how that even works!

So I found the geocache, my SECOND CACHE EVER!!  The box is attached very securely to the ground, so it’s not going anywhere.  I don’t know what possessed me to start feeling around it for an opening but I did, maybe there was a note in the app activity logs that mentioned something, I can’t remember.  So yeah, slid the container out and there were all the goodies, if you can call them that.  There was a log and a pencil, but the log was very wet so I did not want to touch it.  Signing the online log would have to be enough!  I didn’t really want to take anything from the box either because due the the wetness of most of the items, it was kind of gross.

It wasn’t until I was back at my hotel that the thought dawned on me that I should have left something in it, a memento of some kind to indicate I was there.  Not that I had anything to leave, but I just wasn’t thinking about it!  I probably could have found something on me, in my wallet or whatnot, sigh!  Newbie alert!  Going forward I will be more mindful of these things on my geocache hunts.

The second cache I found in Reykjavik was a virtual one.  The name of it is “The Unknown Bureaucrat” which when first reading I wonder what on earth that could possibly mean.  And then upon making my way to the location, it becomes blatantly obvious what it is.  I didn’t look at the logs with pictures that other people posted, honest!  Found this one without any other hints and without difficulty.

So that was Iceland.  I received an Iceland souvenir in the geocaching app which was a very nice touch.  I gotta say that geocaching is like hunting for treasures in World of Warcraft, except it’s real life!!  And geocaching souvenirs are like achievements in WoW so hey, I’m up for the challenge!
