Day 3 on snowshoes! Today’s trek was the Burstall Trail which is south of Canmore and Spray Lakes Provincial Park in Kananaskis Country. No loop this time, we went “There and Back Again,” just like Bilbo Baggins on one of his adventures! Well maybe not quite as far as Bilbo went, the total distance was just over 10 km (more than I’m used to!), and my trusty fitbit tracked it all.
The trail was mostly though forest, although when looking up you could see blue sky and sun and mountain tops everywhere. The weather was fantastic, so warm in some areas that gloves, toque, and even jacket were not required. But NOT ALL areas… When reaching the 5 km mark, we came out of the forest and into a meadow and the WIND! The wind was nasty, it would come up real fast and real cold, and we could see snow gusts that looked like mini tornadoes being blown across the open area (why didn’t I get a picture of those?!) It would come and go though, thankfully. We had to cross part of the meadow (which apparently is actually a swampy marsh during summer months) in order to view the scenic goal this trip had in mind: The Robertson Glacier.

So there you have it, Day 3! I really enjoyed all of these snowshoeing adventures, and learned lots about the sport (is it a sport?), the gear, and discovered some trails for future snowshoeing, hiking, or biking excursions. Cheers all!
