The last thing I did before leaving the Dawson area was visit the Midnight Dome Viewpoint, a 15 minute drive from the city centre up a gravel road on a large hill or small mountain, however you want to look at it. And no I wasn’t up there at midnight, this was around 08:30 am on Sunday morning.
The first formal gathering to see the midnight sun (as per the sign below) occurred on June 21, 1899. There was a ceremony and a speech. Then the sun set one-half hour before midnight and rose again two hours later, DOH!! So going forward, no one expects to see the midnight sun on the solstice, but this viewpoint is still popular for ‘sightseeing and celebrating the long summer nights.‘
The view is very scenic no matter which direction you look. The Yukon River shots were the best I thought, guess I could have stood a bit closer to the edge!
