I completed the drive from Northwest Territories down to Fort Nelson for a two night pit stop there before heading off to Watson Lake, Yukon. Now THIS highway, WOW! It changes from Liard Trail (Highway 7) on the NWT side to Liard Highway 77 on the BC side. Interestingly enough it’s still called the Liard in BC, although it looks like the Liard River runs through a good portion of Northern BC.
This road was nearly 2 hours of almost complete nothingness!! There were very few turnoffs to places, a provincial park and a campground or two. It was paved thankfully, and it was nice and beautiful with lots of trees and mostly smooth and wide, but the speed limit was 80 km/h all the way down to the Alaska Highway, whaaaaaaat!!! Pretty as it was, time went a little slow doing this stretch, which was a rare thing because I found time to generally fly by most of the time while driving.

I had originally thought that I might camp at the Beaver Lake Recreation site which was close to the junction of Highway 77 and the Alaska Highway 97 but again, by the time I reached that turnoff I was ready to be done with this highway. Also it was time for a proper shower and to do some laundry and maybe get a blog post or two completed, thus the decision to stay in Fort Nelson for two nights. Oh, and bears!!
Happy Canada Day!! It just happened to be Canada Day while I was there visiting. I picked a wonderful time to be traveling through our great country! I watched the Canada Day parade which went down the main drag and was done in about 10 minutes!
I am still wearing my hoodie because it was windy and a bit cool in the morning but I must say, there were no beasties flying around, THANK THE GODS!

I went wandering after the parade to see if I could get a day with 10,000 steps in. I walked by a chain link fence that had a bunch of art attached to it, thought it was kind of neat:

Walked past the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum as well. There were tributes to the veterans and builders of the Alaska Highway:

This ice cream shack was near the museum, nope didn’t try it! I just liked the decor outside. Oddly enough there was no one here, the door sign does say it’s open. Maybe it was too early in the day still, but it was certainly warming up with the wind dying down:

Stayed at the Super 8 and saw this trailer with a North Carolina license plate:

This Super 8 is the second I’ve stayed at on my trip and its rewards program is endorsed by none other than TORMUND GIANTSBANE (Game of Thrones)!! HOW COULD YOU NOT SUPPORT THIS GUY?!! He has a new name now, the WYNDHAM WYZARD!! Well maybe not so new, looks like he’s been doing this for a few years. Go Tormund!! 🙂
