How could I forget both the coolest and warmest (and cutest!) thing about Akureyri, the heart traffic lights! Every red traffic light I saw in the city is in the shape of a heart! This is worthy of its own post! There are apparently hearts all over the city, which I’m told started appearing around 2008 after a financial crisis in Iceland. They are to promote positive thinking and encourage everyone to keep smiling. I also heard they were created for a festival of some kind (maybe related to the crisis?) and the idea just stuck, so the city kept them around afterward. I suppose either story could be correct? These lights are amazing and made me smile every time I saw one during the two days I was there. Great job Akureyri, WIN!!
